What Is Aeration?

In technical terms, aeration is the naturally occurring process of air exchange between the soil and its surrounding atmosphere. In layman’s terms, aeration is the process of punching holes (usually 7 -10 cm’s deep) into your lawn to allow water, oxygen, fertilizers, and other nutrients to penetrate the soil and better reach the roots of your grass. Aerating can also help in breaking up the build-up of thatch, (layers of living and decaying stems and roots), in your lawn. How Does Aeration Work?

  • Aeration equipment has many hollow coring tines, that when passed over the lawn will puncture the soil and remove small plugs of soil.
  • The small plugs of soil and thatch are left on the lawn since they contain micro-organisms that are beneficial in helping break down the remaining thatch.
  • The small plugs of soil will disappear back into the lawn in 7-10 days or when the grass is mowed.

Why Aerate?

The need to aerate a lawn generally stems from compacting from heavy use such as foot traffic. Typically, the more clay you have in your soil, the more susceptible your lawn is to compacting. Your lawn requires three elements for survival - moisture, nutrients, and air. When your lawn gets heavily compacted, its roots get deprived of the air they need to survive and grow. Additionally, aerating allows water and nutrients to better penetrate into the soil and to the grass roots. If you have problems with pooling of water in your lawn, or are on a steep slope, aerating can help to trap the water and absorb it more quickly into the ground. If you have a small build-up of thatch each year, aerating generally solves this problem as well.

Aeration Benefits

Aeration can help make your lawn healthier in the following ways:

  • Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere
  • Reduced soil compaction
  • Stronger grass roots
  • Improved fertilizer uptake
  • Better water uptake
  • Reduced water runoff
  • Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance
  • Improved thatch breakdown

Need a New Lawn?

Need to Repair an Old One?

Hydroseeding is the answer!!

66% less costly than sod

80% more effective than grass seed alone

What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a planting process which utilizes a mixture of water, seed, fertilizer and protective mulch. The mixture is transported in a tank, either truck or trailer-mounted and sprayed over prepared ground in a uniform layer. Hydroseeding is an alternative to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seed. It promotes quick germination and inhibits soil erosion. The mulch in the hydroseed mixture helps maintain the moisture level of the seed and seedlings.

Advantages of Hydroseeding Over Dry Seeding

  •  Hydroseeded lawns come up faster. The contact of the seed with water will trigger the germination cycle. Grass can start to show in 5 to 7 days.
  • 2. Hydroseeding has an attractive green appearance that looks far better than lawns dry seeded.
  • 3. Hydroseeding allows the custom tailoring of the proper seed for your job and uniform spreading of the seed.
  • 4. Hydroseeding mulch adds to the humus content of a lawn as it decomposes.

Advantages Of Hydroseeding Over Sod

1. Sod generally costs 3 to 5 times more than hydroseeding. Hydroseeding will often produce turf as nice looking as sod within a very short time at a significant cost savings.

2. With hydroseeding the new seedlings are grown on your soil. Sod can have a problem with the type of soil it was grown on, not having sufficient compatibility with the soil it is planted on. This is called "not taking".

3. With sod the roots are chopped off resulting in a less healthy plant.

4. With sod it is important to have sod installed by someone who has a lot of experience. Sod will shrink over the first month and if it is not installed properly gaps will open up between the sod rows.
